Rising Sun Running Club Ready for Golden Run 2000

The 8th annual Golden Run on Okinawa has been scheduled for Sunday, April 30th, starting at 7:45 in the morning. However, preparations for the big sports rendezvous are already on full gear, as the Rising Sun Running Club and the Kadena 18th wing Public Affairs office lay the bases for a smooth and successful event.

According to sources close to the organizers and main sponsors of the Golden Run, a ½ Marathon for running and wheelchair, a 10 km and a 5 km run are being planned for the Year 2000 edition of the popular event. The Golden Run is the 3rd largest non-trim running event on Okinawa, and it is known to always draw large crowds to Kadena.

Coming on the heels of last week’s Okinawa Marathon, the Golden Run will be another opportunity for local and foreign athletes on the island to compete in the spirit of true sportsmanship. For the past years, the Golden Run has been an annual event programmed to promote good community relations between the US Military and local nationals. The event is normally coordinated by the 18th Wing Public Affairs Office and the Rising Sun Running Club. The event also signals the beginning of the celebration of the Okinawan Golden Week holiday that takes place during the first week of May.

Local nationals, Americans and other foreigners on the island are all allowed to participate in the friendly competition. Organizers say they are expecting a minimum of 2,500 participants. However, most of the runners from within the Okinawan community are always supported by their families, hence raising numbers to more than 6,000 people.

The Rising Sunshine Running Club has often relied on the logistical support of volunteers to make the event a success. The volunteers assist with all aspects of the races - from preparing race packages to working the Finish Line. The Okinawan Running Club Association, a prestigious local organization, also plays an important part in assisting with the Golden Race by providing volunteers and equipment.

The Rising Sunshine Running Club is a nonprofit organization. Most of its events have benefited charitable causes on Okinawa, including off-base orphanages and other running clubs, disaster relief efforts, the Special Olympics Organization and other moral based entities. The Club has also given a lot of support to on and off base scouting community programs.

Any organization or persons interested in lending assistance to this year’s Golden Run should contact a member of the Executive Committee at 633-0075 (on-base volunteers) or (098) 875-1529 (off-base).
