AFJROTC Cadets and Amelia Earhart Students’ Space Projects

Date Posted: 2000-02-27

Teams of Kadena High School Air Force JROTC cadets are presently presenting lesson plans that they wrote by themselves to 5th Graders of the Amelia Earhart Intermediate School. The program is being conducted under the sponsorship of Ms. Karen Dees, a Science Teacher. The program schedule, which started at noon on Wednesday, February 23rd, will run until Friday, March 3rd.

The High School students are supposed to use what they should have learnt in their Aerospace Science Exploration of Space course as a basis for their presentations.

After the presentations, they will conduct a lab where the Elementary students will build and launch rockets using a compressed rocket system. Later in the spring, when the weather becomes clearer, the cadets will return and launch more sophisticated rockets that they have constructed in their space course.

School authorities are presently contending the possibility of expanding the program to other elementary schools, to include the presentation of other subjects such as basic aerodynamics that the cadets learn in their Aerospace Science Courses. Authorities believe that such programs strengthen high school and elementary school partnerships. “The elementary students learn from outstanding informed young role models, while the high school students refine their communication skills, and everyone enjoys working with each other,” Ret. Lt. Col. Phillip J. Norris, Senior Aerospace Science Instructor says.
