Launching of “Circle to Sing and Learn English”

Date Posted: 2000-02-27

An event has been scheduled on Saturday, February 26th, on the 3rd Floor of the Urasoe City Social Welfare Center, to mark in celebration the inauguration of a “Circle to Sing and Learn English.” The get-together meeting, sponsored by the Practical English Language Promotion Center (PELPC), will start at 7:00 p.m. The Social Welfare Center is situated in front of the Urasoe City Civic Hall.

The promoters of the “Circle to Sing and Learn English” believe that the English Language plays an important role in the world in favor of better understanding among people of different nations. It is the most widely spoken language of our time, used at international conferences like the G8 Summit scheduled for Okinawa this coming July. A private study group known as the 21st Century Japan recently advised Prime Minister Obuchi to make English a second official language in Japan within the coming years.

The idea of the “Circle” is to introduce what they consider as a “revolutionary way to learn English,” whereby members learn the language through singing famous songs by artists like Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Frank Sinatra, Andy William, and some famous movie themes. The Circle also hopes to promote friendly relationships among the various communities in Okinawa, while helping the local citizens to improve their English skills through singing.
