STD Cases on Increase

Date Posted: 2000-02-27

The number of people contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STD) is increasing, and the infected are younger every year, according to a report published by the Prefectural Chubu Hospital.

The report compares the cases to the situation 11 years ago. According to the report, severe cases that require hospital stay have almost doubled. The report also says that one in every five pregnant women is infected. The report warns that if the infections are left untreated, the women may become unfertile. An STD can also affect the fetus severely.

The Prefecture Health Promotion Section is clearly concerned. “We are very surprised and alarmed because of this report” a director at the Health Promotion Section said. “We have urgently taking measures to educate especially young people in order to fight this problem.”

A doctor who helped to compile the report says that the average age of the patients has decreased by three years in the past four years. In particular, the number of teenage girls with an STD has increased significantly. “We have to get teachers and parents to educate these kids more,” he said.
