Awamori Association Unveils “Summit Bottle”

Date Posted: 2000-02-27

Okinawa Prefecture Awamori Association unveiled a new bottle they call “Bankokushinryou” or “International Friendship” for the occasion of the Okinawa G-8 Summit in July. Only 2000 bottles will be made, and they come in two sizes: a 1.8 litre bottle that contains 43% strong Awamori, priced at ¥14,000 and a smaller 720 ml bottle of milder 25% Awamori costing ¥2,000.

The top-grade Awamori is aged 10 years, and the Okinawa Awamori Association Chairman Shuujin Shimabukuro sees it as an ideal vehicle of making Okinawan culture known to the world. “Okinawa Summit gives us a very good opportunity to make Okinawan way of life and culture known all over the world,” Shimabukuro stated. “This ten-years-old Awamori makes you happy, it really gives a taste of Okinawan culture to the drinker.”
