Prefecture plans transportation system improvements by 2020

Date Posted: 2002-02-07

Okinawa Prefecture on Jan. 31 unveiled a proposal for renewing the islandís transportation system by the year 2020. The plan takes into consideration such factors as supporting local industry, physical location and distribution, and tourism requirements. Suggestions were also made for introducing a magnetically levitated train at what is presently MCAS Futenma and extending the monorail line beyond Shuri. The possibility of developing new forms of transportation is regarded as a long-term goal, however, due to financial constraints. The current proposal focuses primarily on improving performance and coverage of the islandís bus system as well as extending the bus-only lanes on highways 58 and 330.
