Citizen’s Group Plans ’Shadow Summits’

Local citizens’ groups are planning a series of meetings and seminars in order to take advantage of the publicity the G8 Summit is creating for Okinawa. The themes of these events include peace, environment, women’s affairs, and support for developing countries. “This is our greatest chance ever to promote Okinawa to the world,” Kouchi Uehara, a representative of one of the groups said.

The events include:

March 6 – 8
Students’ Summit in Okinawa at Okinawa Convention Center. Organized by Students’ Summit Committee

June 16 – 17
United Nations Human Rights Symposium at Okinawa Prefecture Women’s Center. Organized by Citizens’ Friendship Center

June 17 – 18
Peace 2000 Seminar at Okinawa Kokusai (International) University. Organized by Japan Peace Study Society

June 22 – 25
International Women’s Summit at at Okinawa Prefecture Women’s Center. Organized by East-Asian and American Women’s Network

June 23 – 25
Nirai-Kanai festival at various locations in the prefecture. Organized by Okinawa Prefecture Visitors’ Bureau

July 1
Peace Summit at Yomitan Village Culture Center

Mid-July
International Environment NGO Forum at Okinawa University. Organized by Okinawa Environmentalist Network

July 18
People’s Summit TOES Meeting at Okinawa Prefecture Youth Center. Organized by Economic Summit TOES Office

July 19 – 20
Jubilee 2000 International Convention at Palette Kumoji City Theater. Organized by Japan Committee for Loan Forgiving to Developing Countries
