Towards the Holding of the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit

By: Keiichi Inamine, Governor of Okinawa

Date Posted: 2000-02-20

In July of 2000 the leaders of the Group of Eight industrialized nations and the President of the European Commission will gather in Okinawa for the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit.

At present, the people of Okinawa prefecture are putting all their energy into preparations to ensure a successful Summit.

Okinawa prefecture lies at the most southwestern part of Japan and consists of 160 islands of varying size, spread across an expanse of sea approximately 1000 km east to west and 400 km north to south.

Taking advantage of its key position in linking the Japanese mainland and continental China with the various nations of Southeast Asia, Okinawa has carried out a lively trade with these nations for a very long ago. During this long history of interaction with the nations of the region, Okinawa developed its own unique and original culture.

Continuing this historical tradition, Okinawa is now striving to be a base for international exchange in the south of Japan.

In this regard, the people of Okinawa feel the true significance of the holding of the 2000 Summit in Okinawa, a meeting which will serve to mediate transition to the 21st century.

The main venue for the Summit meeting in Okinawa will be Nago city in the Cape Busena resort area, famous for its beautiful, surrounding coral-reef. Furthermore, as a wonderful location commanding sweeping views of the East China Sea, the resort hotels stretching along the west coast from the main meeting venue will be set aside as accommodation for delegates from participating nations.

To ensure an outstanding Summit meeting, held in an atmosphere that engages Okinawa's beautiful nature and rich culture, the people of Okinawa will welcome all those who visit Okinawa from around the globe with their warm hospitality. I sincerely hope that many of you will offer us your support and cooperation in our endeavors towards the holding of the Summit.
