Starbucks to open Naha, Chatan outlets in 2002

Starbucks Coffee Japan announced on Jan. 31 that it plans to open two shops on Okinawa later this year. Negotiations are under way with landowners in both Naha and Chatan as potential sites, although details concerning location and opening dates are reportedly undecided at present. Established in 1971, the Seattle-based company has become the largest coffee-shop franchise in the world. Starbucks Coffee Japan was founded in 1995 and had 323 outlets in 24 prefectures as of January. The company anticipates 500 shops in Japan by the end of 2003.
