The Filipino Community in the Ryuku Islands (FILCOMRI), an association regrouping over 300 natives of the Philippinnes, friends and family members resident on Okinawa, will be hosting a giant Valentine’s Day Party this weekend. The Valentine celebration, scheduled to take place at the Butler Officers’ Club this Saturday, February 12th, from 6:00 p.m. to midnight, is expected to be one of the most attended among the many Valentine’s Day occasions being organized on the island this year.

FILCOMRI is an association whose main objectives are to foster goodwill and understanding among members, to promote their welfare and well being, and to promote mutual friendship and cultural exchanges between the Filipino community, the Japanese and other ethnic groups in Okinawa. Harumi Garcia, the association’s President, says her goal this year is “to increase membership and to organize more fundraising events to support charities.” Harumi Garcia is only the first lady to be serving a second term as President since the creation of FILCOMRI in 1966.

For this Saturday’s Valentine celebration, the program will include a contest for Mr. and Mrs. Valentine. There will also be a lot of entertainment, provided by the Philippine Cultural Association Dance group, and general dancing after the initial dinner and fundraising event. Tickets for the dinner cost $22.00 or ¥2,500.

Candidates for the Mr. & Mrs. Valentine contest this year are Allan and Frances Komesu, Pete and Elsa Reantaso, Scott and Rea Wesner, Nelson and Baby Macabasco, Dave and Mila Lockhart, Andrew and Daisy Elliott, Joe and Marylin Barcelona. The winners for last year, Dr. & Mrs. Oshiro, will crown the new winners.

For more information on tickets, contact Rudy Estabillo at 633-1266, Joe Garabiles at 926-0075, Reini Komesu at 897-3366, Benz Garcia at 957-3864, and Oyee Mendoza at 897-0772.
