NTT West to reduce local operation by 80 percent

Date Posted: 2002-02-07

In anticipation of a large-scale deficit stemming from phone-charge competition, NTT West Japan announced on Jan. 31 that it would downsize its Okinawa-branch workforce to one-fifth its present size. There are currently about 1,000 local employees, of which 800 would be transferred to a subsidiary company at a 30 percent loss in pay. NTT-DO, currently employing approximately 500 people, will be renamed and re-established on May 1, becoming one of the largest employers in Okinawa. In addition to sales, customer service and facility engineering already transferred from NTT West, the newly reshaped NTT-DO will assume all functions from the former telecommunications giant.
