Grand Opening of New Kadena Child Development Center

Date Posted: 2000-02-04

The Shima No Ko Child Development Center, located in Bldg. 4081, will be holding its grand opening ceremony on February 16th at 10:30 a.m. The event will consist of a ribbon and cake cutting and a guided tour of the facility. This 23,595 square foot facility located by Kadena’s Gate 3, replaced the older facility, Bldg. 327, in November of 1999. It is the third Child Development Center funded by the Government of Japan on Kadena Air Base.

The facility, which boasts a total capacity of 272 children, increased the number of child care spaces by 176 and decreased the waiting list for working parents by 50%.

Shima No Ko, meaning Children of the Island, is one of three child development centers on Kadena Air Base. The facility offers full time care for children 6 weeks to three years old, part-day before and after kindergarten care to children 5 and 6 years old, as well as a child enrichment program for youth ages 3 to 5 years old.

Additionally, the new facility accommodates two DODDS classrooms which serve developmentally challenged preschool-age children.

Future plans call for the installation of playground equipment in the infant, pretoddler and toddler playgrounds, the relocation of the School Age Program, expansion of full-time services for preschool-age children and the addition of an hourly-care program.
