Okinawa Governor Meets with Government Officials in Tokyo

Date Posted: 2000-02-04

Representatives of the Okinawa Prefectural Government, Nago City and the national government met in Tokyo recently to discuss issues relating to the development of the northern part of Okinawa. Present at the meeting were Cabinet Chief Secretary Aoki, Governor Keichi Inamine, Mayor Kishimoto of Nago, two village leaders, and officials from 13 different government departments with an interest in northern Okinawa development. Nago City and its surrounding districts in northern Okinawa will benefit from a special development package because of the upcoming G8 Summit that will take place in that area, and because of the selection of Henoko to host a US Marine air facility after it moves out of Futenma.

The Cabinet Secretary talked of the government's intention to set up two tripartite committees consisting of ministers, the Okinawa Prefecture boss and heads of the municipalities in northern Okinawa. The said committees will bear the task of outlining and executing plans for the economic development of northern Okinawa. They will also oversee the development, specifically, of the Henoko district which will be the future host of a relocated US Marine Corps heliport. The central government is planning a conference of all the ministers and agency chiefs concerned in order to sustain the committees’ activities.
