The Calming Effects of Azulmar’s Therapeutic Services

By: Marie W. Conway

Date Posted: 2000-01-28

Conway Azulmar Health Este House opened its doors at 11 a.m. on November 11th, 1999. As 1999 was the 11th year according to the traditional Japanese calendar, the series of elevens linked to the date of Azulmar’s inauguration is considered by Okinawans to be a “lucky number” combination. Sisters Akemi Ishikawa and Sachie Toma believe that this combination has contributed to the success of their business.

Azulmar offers three types of services: body massage, facials, and study courses. One massage option is a 1-hour body slimming course for ¥2000. It includes a heated body wrap, an aroma therapy massage, cupping, and vibration. Ishikawa says that, while most salons offer only aroma therapy massages, Azulmar also aligns the bone structure for better support and flexibility. At ¥3000, the basic facial is a 60-minute session that cleanses and washes away dirt and excess oils from your skin. The plaster mask, at a cost of ¥5000, is perfect for those with sensitive skin and provides a deeper cleansing than the facial. Ishikawa recommends her clients come in for a consultation, which she can conduct either in Japanese or in English.

Ishikawa also has the experience of having worked in physical therapy. In order to achieve the best results, both Ishikawa and Toma say they use only the most exclusive creams and oils that penetrate the second layer of the skin, whereas most salons use products that only glaze the surface.

Classes in landscaping, gardening and English are also available. For class times and further information, call 938-0685. Consultations and other services are offered on appointment only. Yen is the only currency accepted. Azulmar is open from 11 a.m.- 8 p.m. daily, but closed on Thursday. Men and women are welcome.

Directions: From Kadena Gate 2, go straight across Hwy. 330. Continue ahead until you cross Hwy. 329. At the 3rd traffic light, take a left onto Misato Kogyo Dori which is just after the Mac House Jeans Shop and liquor store on the right. Go through a traffic light and you'll see a Laundromat (coin laundry) and a small store on the left. Make a left heading toward the river. At the end of the street, you'll see the two-story building.
