Korinza’s Italiano Induces Salivation at First Glance

There are lots of Italian eateries all over Okinawa. Some of them are really big and offer a variety of generic and original dishes on their menu cards. Others are much smaller, and concentrate more on offering their customers a select collection of well prepared food that may provoke one’s salivary glands to react vigorously at first glance. On the First Floor of Okinawa City’s famous Korinza Mall, to the left of the main entrance, one Italiano restaurant operates under the second option described above, offering lunch and dinner menus that guarantee intensive culinary experiences for its guests.

The Italiano at Korinza Mall is managed by Chef Shimabukuro Katsunori. He became manager of the Korinza Branch after undergoing two years of training at the Italiano Chatan branch. Before moving into the food business, Katsunori-San was in the regular business, a factor which seems to help him in his efforts to provide the best service possible at the Korinza Italiano.

The restaurant offers two main types of courses from 2:00 p.m. First, the A course for ¥1.300, which is the Pasta-of-the-day, served with salad, bread, and a drink (choice of wine, beer or a soft drink). The B course is another choice of Pasta-of-the-day served only with salad, bread and cake for ¥700. Italiano also offers a choice of popular spaghettis: Carbonola (with cream sauce) and spaghetti with egg plant and salmon in tomato sauce.

Manager Katsunori says that his main customers are young Japanese teenagers and ladies in their 20’s, Japanese and American couples. The location of his restaurant so close to the big Kadena Air Base definitely presents him with a huge reservoir of potential clients. That is the reason why, besides the house specialties, he also has on the menu other spaghetti varieties ranging between ¥700 and ¥1.300; appetizers a la carte (¥700-¥1.200); 10-inch Pizza for ¥900 or ¥1.000; Gratin (¥800-¥1.300); and Short Pasta (¥850-¥900. Besides the miscellaneous selection of popular Italian dishes, one can also order a set menu with salad, garlic bread, coffee or tea and desert, with any of the main dishes on the list. Finally, the Korinza Italiano also serves a Kid’s menu for ¥480 and extra Pasta for ¥200.

The Italiano at Korinza Mall opens 7 days per week, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight. It is only closed on the days that Korinza Mall is itself not open to the public.

DIRECTIONS: Korinza Mall is situated on Rte 23. From Gate 2 Kadena, make a left and head towards Gate 3 on Rte 23. At the first light, make a right unto the big building (Korinza), and look for the Parking entrance. The Italiano is on the first Floor of the building, near the main entrance.
