Minami-Daitou Island Celebrates its Centenary

Date Posted: 2000-01-28

The Minami-Daitou Island, located off of the south end of Okinawa, celebrated its centenary (100th anniversary) on Sunday, January 23rd. The island was formerly deserted. Then, in 1900, a group of Okinawans migrated to the land and began the difficult task of building a town with a civilized system of living. The ceremony, held at the “Frontier Park,” included the unveiling of a stone monument marking the island's 100th year of civilization. 500 people gathered for the event, among them many political figures from mainland Japan and Okinawa. One descendant of an original immigrant addressed the audience, acknowledging the “hard work and great perseverance of [their] ancestors.”
