Fugitive from Aichi Prefecture Caught in Okinawa

Between July 16th, 1999 and January 11th of this year, Masahide Kato, 27, had been issuing several threats against his wife, demanding her to give him money amounting to •1,000,000. Kato had once been arrested by the police and incarcerated for a while, on charges of assault and obstructing the performance of official duties. The threats started when he and his wife lived separately, as discussions over their divorce went on. Both of them lived in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. The man then decided to visit his wife at her parentsí house, where he reportedly assaulted her. One of the wife's family members called the police to report the incident and the violent husband, Kato, was arrested. Later, Kato started demanding money from his wife in compensation for the fact that he had been arrested and put in jail. The Police started searching for Masahide Kato, and set a warrant of arrest all over Japan on January 17th of this year. On January 19th, Okinawa Prefectural Police received information from Aichi Prefectural Police that the suspect seemed to be in Okinawa. The next day, they were notified that the suspect was staying at a hotel in Naha City. Prefectural Police dispatched officers to the hotel immediately, and they caught Kato there at 1:35 p.m.
