Okinawa's other Miyazato captures Safeway Classic

Date Posted: 2012-08-24

She’s the hottest name in women’s golf, and Mika Miyazato proved it Sunday with a dominating victory in the Ladies Professional Golf Tour Safeway Classic.

Miyazato, who tied for the first round lead and then forged a lead for the second and third rounds, claimed the gold with a two-stroke victory Sunday for her first LPGA Tour title. Her two-under-70 was more than enough to beat South Korea’s In-Bee Park and Brittany Lincicome.

The 22-year-old Okinawan picked up a $225,000 winner’s purse. This is Mika’s fourth year on the LPGA tour. The world’s number one lady golfer, Taiwan’s Yani Tseng, fired a disappointing final round 73 to finish six under par.

The victory was enough to propel Mika Miyazato into the 10th position in LPGA World Rankings. Fellow Okinawan Ai Miyazato is ranked fifth. Ai Miyazato won the Safeway Classic in 2010. Ai, four years older than Mika, currently has nine career LPGA wins that have netted her well over $6 million in winnings. The two aren’t related, but “everybody asks me ‘oh, are you Ai’s sister?’”, Mika Miyazato says. “It’s Ok with me. I think everybody knows Ai, so I don’t know if somebody knows me. I think it’s lucky. Same last name, just different first name.
