ATM swindler has cops again warning citizens

Date Posted: 2012-08-24

The man called the unsuspecting victim and spewed his lies, telling him there would be money forthcoming on fee returns for medical treatment.

The victim and the swindler, says the Urasoe Police Department, recently sent a 64-year-old male victim to a supermarket ATM, where he was ripped off some ¥150,000 ($1,950). The criminal had introduced himself in a phone call as an Urasoe City Hall staff member, telling the victim “you have a refund for five years” and asked the man to meet at the ATM.

Once there, the criminal explained a transfer process where actually the victim winds up moving cash from his account to another account outside Okinawa. Okinawa Prefecture Police are appealing to the public to never accept calls that include promises of “you have a refund” because they’re all scams.
