Kunigami Village set to Welcome OkinawaDate Posted: 2012-08-24 ![]() Kunigami Village, located 30 kilometers north of Nago City, is the most northern community on the island, with 95% of the village being forest and natural monuments. It’s home to the Yanbarukuina, the Okinawa Rail, the Noguchigera, the Okinawa Woodpecker, and the Tenagakogane, the Yanbaru long-armed scarab beetle. It also boasts the highest hill on the island, Yonaha Hill. Visitors are also told 23% of the village land is used as training sites for the U.S. military, but other than that, Hedo Point, Kayauchi Banta, Kongousekirinzan and Hiji Falls are popular tourist points. Opening ceremonies are at 5 p.m., followed by Eisa, Karate, Hawaiian Hula dances and Karaoke. A dance performance by Hokuzan no Kaze is at 7:50 p.m., followed by Space Daughters at 8:15 p.m. and The Requio at 8:40. Bon odori is at 9 p.m. On Sunday, a Haarii tournament kicks off at 2 p.m., followed by a fish grabbing festival at 4 p.m. and a not-to-be-missed Ladies Arm Wrestling Tournament at 5 p.m. Of course a wter melon speed eating tournament, a goya juice speed drinking competition and a beer speed drinking tournament at 6 p.m. add excitement. The evening settles down with Zukan live in concert at 7:05 p.m., followed by Mori Kazuko’s Okinawan folk songs at 7:45 p.m. and D-51 live at 8:30 p.m. Fireworks wrap the Kunigami Village Festival Sunday at 9:20 p.m. |
