Ogimi Festival mixes performances, haarii

Date Posted: 2012-08-10

Tiny Ogimi Village in northern Okinawa is readying its community of 3,500 for an influx of visitors for the Ogimi Festival this weekend.

The annual event takes place at the village’s Shioya Fishing Port starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, running through the evening with local citizen performances and karaoke, capped by a Ryuta Shiroma musical performance at 8:20 p.m. Ogimi Village is part of an area known as Kunigami, and is famous for residents’ longevity. It’s often called the area where people live the very longest in Japan.

It’s also said Ogimi Village is the country for the ‘’Bunagaya’ fairy, the Shikuwa-sa Okinawan lemon, and Basyohu, abaca cloth. Residents welcome the outsiders for the weekend’s events.

Sunday’s action at Shioya Fishing Port starts with the preliminary tug-of-war contest at 2 p.m., followed by musical entertainments from the community, including the high school band and Oba-rappers. The Tug-of-War final takes place at 7 p.m., followed by Anga-pechin live music at 7:30 p.m., fireworks at 8:15 p.m., and the Ogimi Youth Eisa Performance closing out the evening at 8:30 p.m.
