Summit Translation Volunteers’ Training on Course

On Sunday, January 23rd, an inaugural ceremony was held to officially launch the training of Summit Translation Volunteers at the Theater Hall of Okinawa Convention Center in Mashiki, Ginowan City.

Some 1,300 people from Okinawa and other regions of Japan, including expatriates, participated in the ceremony. During the speeches marking the occasion, the assistant director of the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit Organization Secretariat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kanji Yamanouchi, emphasized the importance of the translation volunteers’ duties during the upcoming Summit. He said that good hospitality for the people visiting Okinawa will be the most important thing during the Summit because it will give the best impression of the Okinawan spirit, more than any other thing.

At the end of the ceremony, the first joint lecture for Summit Translation Volunteers was held. The chief of the Prefecture People’s Summit Promotion Council Volunteer Section explained the leitmotiv and objectives of the voluntary activities that the translation volunteers will conduct and the main principles that they must respect. There was a lecture of the outlining the history of G8 Summit Meetings held from 1995 to 1999.

There will be some more joint lectures and separate regional lectures till the month of March. By the month of April, around 500 translation volunteers will be selected from over 1,500 people who registered for the course.
