Okinawa community leaders want base deal canceled

Date Posted: 2012-08-08

Political leaders in Okinawa have adopted a resolution calling for cancellation of a Japanese-U.S. agreement to transfer Futenma Marine Corps Air Station from Ginowan City to northern Okinawa.

The resolution opposing the Futenma transfer to the Henoko coastal area in Nago was adopted at a meeting of leaders of 12 municipalities in northern Okinawa. The meeting was held in Nago. At a press conference, Tsuyoshi Gibu, chairman of the group and mayor of Kin, said the group is against hosting any more U.S. bases.

"The resolution will be a strong weapon," said Nago Mayor Susumu Inamine, who has opposed the Henoko transfer since taking office in 2010. The leaders adopted another resolution opposing the planned deployment of the Marine Corps' MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor transport aircraft to Okinawa.
