Heavy rains trigger six landslides Monday

Date Posted: 2012-08-08

Heavy rains accompanying Typhoon Haikui caused at least a half-dozen landslides across Okinawa Monday, but no damages were caused to buildings and no injuries reported.

In Kitanakagusuku Village Shimabukuro district, woods and dirt swept across a village road, partially covering it. In nearby Higa district, trees and mud from the hills swept onto a field, while in the Adaniya district of Kitanakagusuku Village, dirt was swept close to a private home that had suffered landslide damages during an earlier heavy rain in April.

In Urasoe City’s Nakanishi district, stones and roots of a dead tree cause a cave in on a steep slope of city land. No damage to a nearby apartment house was reported. Urasoe City officials have checked the site and plan to remove the roots soon. In the Kouchi district of Nishihara Town, part of a wall adjacent to a parking lot at a prefectural high-rise apartment building crumbled, knocking dirt onto a town road.

Nishihara Town staff say they’ve dispatched crews to remove the dirt, and have established a safety perimeter, covering the side with a blue tarp. In Ginowan City’s Kakazu district, a big tree toppled, caving in a slope near a private residence.
