Nago Mayor's Cup Haarii postponed by week

The 34th Nago Mayor’s Cup Haarii Contest is re-set for Nago Fishing Port for Sunday, with dozens of teams competing for the coveted title because if the approaching typhoon this weekend.

The annual event bringing together the Nago community, tourists and dragon boat race teams from across Okinawa and Japan kicks off at 8:30 a.m., and runs to 6 p.m. Preliminary contests over the 300-meter course pit three teams per group. The top 27 12-man teams move to the quarter finals, racing in three-team competitions.

The afternoon semi-finals put the top nine teams into competition over the 300 meters course. The top three winners advance to the dragonboat championship round across a 620-meter course.

The Ladies’ team matches follow a similar pattern, with three-team competitions in the preliminary rounds, followed by three-team races in semi-finals. The top three dragon boat teams compete over the 300 meters course for the ladies’ championship.
