Teen faces multiple charges after drunk motorcycle ride

Date Posted: 2012-08-03

He wasn’t the typical drunk driver, but Naha Police quickly rolled into action to chase, apprehend and charge a teenager after he scraped his motorcycle against a police car, then fled the scene.

The 17-year-olld high school student was driving a 125cc motorcycle on Highway 58 in the Tomari area of Naha City when he ran afoul of the law, striking the police patrol car. Abandoning the motorbike, the boy fled on foot into the Maejima district, finally jumping into the ocean at the Tomari Takahashi district. The drunken teen was fished from the water by a police officer from a near-by police box.

When tested, the teen had twice the legal limit of alcohol on his breath. Police say a patrol car had been chasing the motorcycle after repeated traffic violations, including running through red traffic lights. When the boy scraped the patrol car as it approached the motorcycle, the boy suffered a knee injury. Police say “there was no problem with our giving chase. It was our rightful performance of duty.”
