Cops arrest professor for torching his residence

Date Posted: 2012-07-27

A university professor is under arrest, charged with arson after totally destroying the second story of his residence in central Okinawa.

Okinawa Prefectural Police say the professor confessed, telling them “I wanted to die, so I set the fire.” Police say the fire burned for nearly four hours, and there were no injuries. Damage to neighboring homes was limited to broken glass and a burned wall. Police say the professor’s words and deeds don’t quite add up, so they’re investigating to determine if there was criminal intent and responsibility.

The arrest charges that the professor poured oil on a pile of clothes in a bedroom closet, then setting the fire. The fire ultimately destroyed the whole second floor, a space of about 165 square meters. Okinawa Prefectural Police say the man’s wife and three sons, and his parents, were in the house at the time of the fire. All escaped without injury.
