Lightning strikes crane, injuring one worker

Date Posted: 2012-07-27

A bolt of lightning that struck a crane truck working on a residential construction site has knocked a 35-year-old worker unconscious, but caused no other injuries.

Officials say the 1:50 p.m. incident in the Zakimi district of Yomitan Village caused the worker headaches and pain in his right ear after lightning struck the crane. The injuries were not serious and he was released later in the afternoon.

The Okinawa Meteorological Observatory had issued a thunderstorm advisory for central and southern Okinawa that day, effective at 12:11 p.m. Because of the lightning strike, some power failures occurred in the Zakimi district of Yomitan Village. Okinawa Power Company reports 730 households were without power, some until after 5:20 p.m.

Kadena Police say the lightning struck the crane truck, and the worker was affected when materials were lifted by the crane. The crane truck operator was not injured.
