Military air conditioner noise irritates residents

Date Posted: 2012-07-27

Noise from large outdoor air conditioning units at Camp Courtney apparently hasn’t improved enough to satisfy residents, leading the Okinawa Defense Bureau to receive demands for action against the Americans.

The air conditioning units serve a high rise apartment building, and have been the subject of complaints since November 2011. The Okinawa Defense Bureau surveyed the units, applying Okinawa Prefecture’s environmental standard value, and in February the U.S. military set up sound insulation covers to reduce the noise.

That’s not enough, complains Tsunehide Miyagi, the head of Midori-machi district 1-chome and 2-chome Residents’ Association. “The noise situation hasn’t improved enough, and we hope the government will take further measures.” An Okinawa Defense Bureau official says he’ll meet with Uruma City and the residents’ association as soon as possible to explain results of a new investigation into the noise.
