JSDF official dies in paragliding accident

Date Posted: 2012-07-27

A 52-year-old Japan Self Defense Force official is dead after an accident while riding a paraglider in Yaese Town’s Hanagusuku district.

Authorities say Michinori Toma crashed his paraglider into a thickly wooded forest area after having taken off from Gushikami Castle Ruins Park about 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Itoman Police say Toma was an experienced paraglider who did so often with friends. At the time of the accident, 5-6 people were in action.

Police say Toma’s paraglider lost lifting power at 30-40 meters in the air, sending him crashing in a screwdriver dive. Toma was conscious and speaking when taken to a nearby hospital, but his condition then deteriorated and he died. Itoman Police are investigating the incident.
