Urasoe assemblyman busted on drunk driving charges

Date Posted: 2012-07-20

A member of the Urasoe City Municipal Assembly has been arrested for drinking and driving while traveling on a city street about 11 p.m. in the Miyagi district of Urasoe City.

Urasoe Police say Tadaaki Shimajiri was stopped by police, at which time he said he was self-employed, but failed to mention he was a City Assemblyman and chairman of the Assembly’s operating committee. Asked why he didn’t admit it, he told police “I didn’t have the sense that being a member of the assembly is a job.”

The 45-year-old Shimajiri was tested by police and found to have six times the legal alcohol limit on his breath. Police say Shimajiri drank alcohol at an Izakaya restaurant in Naha City. When traveling on Highway 330 north, his car brushed against a taxi stopped at a traffic light. Shimajiri fled the scene, but was caught when the taxi driver called the police emergency 110 number when he stopped at another traffic light. Police then tracked Shimajiri down and arrested him.

Keisuke Shimoji, the chairman of the Urasoe City Municipal Assembly, said “it is a regrettable matter when an assembly member, who should be a model of Urasoe City residents, commits a scandal by drunk driving. We will put our effort to regaining trust of our citizens.”
