Dispute over Senkaku actions prompts China envoy recall

Date Posted: 2012-07-20

Japan’s anger over Chinese actions in the Senkaku Islands region of southern Okinawa Prefecture has riled the Foreign Minister, who’s recalled his Ambassador to China.

Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba has ordered Uichiro Niwa back to Tokyo, where “I will report and have consultations.” The move follows Japanese complaints lodged with Beijing about Chinese vessels entering the uninhabited but resources-rich islands near Ishigaki. China claims the islands, which it calls Diaoyu, but Japan insists the islands are under Japanese control.

China’s ambassador to Japan was also called into the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo to listen to Japan’s grievances. China’s responding with its own complaints about Japanese plans to buy the islands from the single family that owns the five craggy islands.
