Everything is happening at Azama SunSun Beach Festival

Date Posted: 2012-07-20

It’s the first weekend of summer, and nobody wants to waste perfectly good weather with Tropical Storm Khanun looking at Okinawa in the rear view mirror after passing a bit to the north on Tuesday.

Azama SunSun Beach Festival is the answer, with a variety of events scheduled for Sunday, starting with a Group Beach Race where teams of five people sprint across the sand to find the fastest sand-runners around. The food’s special, with a barbeque of inexpensive, delicious meats barbequed by an Azama chef beginning at 1 p.m.

The Karaoke Contest promises to be plenty of fun, and organizers encourage visitors to “prepare your best karaoke song and perform on an open-air stage”. The winner receives a 32” LCD TV, and the professional environment with lighting, sound and stage equipment should add additional motivation. Also in the afternoon there’s a Beach Dash (running) Contest. To make things interesting, women wearing bikinis are given a two-meter handicap.

An evening Yukata Contest will bring out the beautiful ladies and their beautiful clothes. The winner will adorn the cover of a local magazine, Okinawa Graph, and will compete for a first prize pet dog. The deadline for signing up, though, is tomorrow. Call (098) 948-4660. Receptionists speak English, so be not afraid.

And of course, no festival is complete without fireworks, and a stunning display’s being mapped out for just after sunset.

Azama SunSun Beach is located in southeast Okinawa, a bit under an hour’s drive east of the Naha Airport. To get there, know it’s located off Highway 331 next to the Chinen Marine Leisure Beach. Azama facilities include a first aid station, umbrella and lounge rentals, lockers, showers, restrooms, a snack bar and plenty of picnic areas. There is also a shop selling beach gear and refreshments.

Next door is a marina offering glass bottom boat tours, dive boat trips and ferry rides to Komaka and Kudaka Islands. Azama Sunsun Beach is on the south-eastern edge of Okinawa. Take Highway 329 south until it runs into 331 to the left, and follow it around the coastline until you see a sign to the beach. A map will be handy for this drive.
