Man dies, son rescued in ocean swim accident

A family outing turned deadly at a beach in the Kawahira district of Ie Village when a man and his four-year-old son went missing in the water near Nya-tiya Cave.

Masaru Gima was swimming with his family when he went missing at 7:19 p.m. Monday. He’d been with his wife and three children at the time he disappeared. Motobu Police say Gima’s nephew who was with him first noticed him missing, and asked for help from nearby people. At that point, it was discovered Gima’s son was also missing.

Searchers found the 42-year-old Gima floating face up on the water near the beach. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A short time later, Gima’s son was pulled from beneath the water unconscious. He was revived by heart massage and is now in a .
