Snorkeler drowns at Chatan’s Miyagi Beach

Date Posted: 2012-07-13

“My friend is lost while snorkeling” is the afternoon call that came in to the Nirai Fire Station in Chatan, triggering a search along the Miyagi seashore.

Initial search efforts didn’t turn up anything, sending the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters into action. Coast Guard officials, police, the fire station rescue team and a diver ultimately found 34-year-old Yuichi Mekaru, a painter from Urasoe City, washed up on a reef about 150 meters off the seashore.

Officials say Mekaru was taken to a hospital in cardiopulmonary arrest, but efforts to revive him were futile. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:41 p.m.
