Unmanned truck careens out of control and crashes

Date Posted: 2012-07-13

A two-ton vehicle transporting truck with a car on the platform raced down a hill, out of control without a driver, and then crashed into a pharmacy in a residential district of Nanjo City.

Yonabaru Police say the incident took place on a steep hill with a 6-degree slope. The 68-year-old truck driver was loading the car when the vehicle began moving on its own. The driver tried unsuccessfully to stop the truck, but suffered injuries while doing so. The truck raced about 100 meters before entering a crossing, crashing with a mini-car and then plowing into the entrance of the pharmacy, where it stopped.

Three people were in the pharmacy adjacent to a children’s hospital in the Ozato district, including a baby. None was injured. The mini-car, after being struck by the truck, hit a motorized bicycle before careening into a fence at the entrance to the shop.
