Microsoft sets October release for Windows 8

Date Posted: 2012-07-12

Technology giant Microsoft is poised to launch its next-generation operating system in October, offering the complex Windows 8 in 109 languages across 231 markets worldwide.

The company’s chief executive, Steve Ballmer, calls Microsoft’s new Windows 8 “the biggest product and services launch year in our company’s history”. He says the new Windows 8 will be available earlier for computer, tablet or smartphone makers, so they can integrate the system into their hardware.

The new Windows 8 operating system will be available in August for computer, tablet or smartphone makers to build into hardware, according to Microsoft. The new operating system comes three years after Windows 7 went public, ultimately being licensed to more than 630 million users.

Microsoft says that its Surface tablets will hit the market when the Windows 8 operating system becomes publicly available. Windows 8 allows users to easily store and share personal data among various devices under the “SkyDrive” cloud computing service. The new Microsoft system will support a wider range of devices, including touch- and stylus-based smartphones and tablet PCs as well as desktop and laptop machines. Versions of Windows 8 have been tailored for chips used to power various mobile devices.
