Currency exchange service expands

Date Posted: 2012-06-29

Okinawa Bank has taken a big step forward in simplifying travel within Asia, offering easy exchange services for the Chinese yuan, New Taiwan dollar, Korean Won and Thai Baht.

This marks the first time that any bank in Okinawa Prefecture exchanges Chinese yuan and New Taiwan dollars. The Okinawa Bank Exchange Service is now operational in Miyako, Yaeyama and on the Okinawa main island branches. A bank official says it decided to take the expansion step to deal with increasing numbers of foreign tourists from China and Taiwan.

Currency exchange is limited to approximately ¥100,000 equivalent per day. Okinawa Bank branches are the Main branch, Makiminato branch, Koza branch and Nago branch on Okinawa island. The Miyako branch was included because local residents demanded service because of the regular stops at Miyakojima Port by cruise ships from Taiwan, and Yaeyama simply because of the tourism push.

The bank says it plans to extend business centering on branches that receive advance information regarding tourists, and will key on Naha City, Kokusai Street and areas where hotels converge.
