Miyazato gals sweep 1-2 at LPGA event

Date Posted: 2012-07-07

It was a day of smiles for Okinawa’s golf sweetheart, Ai Miyazato, who poked in a five-foot birdie to win the Northwest Arkansas LPGA Tournament Sunday, her second LPGA win of the year and enough to propel her into third place in the LPGA Rolex Standings.

Ai Miyazato fired a 6-under-65 to power past an earlier deficit and gain momentum to win her second tournament of the year, and her ninth overall. The birdie on No. 18 set her 12 under for the tournament at Pinnacle Country Club. “I knew I needed to make lots of birdies today,” says Miyazato, “but I didn’t have any expectation and I didn’t have any pressure on the front nine. That’s why I think I focused on my game and had four birdies on the front nine.

She ended with seven birdies and only one bogey to finish atop the leader board, one stroke ahead of fellow Okinawan Mika Miyazato and Azahara Munoz. Ai Miyazato admits having mixed feelings for her colleague, feeling sorry for her after Mika missed out on her first LPGA title. Mika says she was disappointed, but that she continues to learn. “I played very well on the front nine with four birdies. I played aggressive, very patient, and everything was good. The back nine was very tough on me. Very disappointing.”

The win moves Ai Miyazato up from 6th place to third in the Rolex LPGA standings. She trails Yani Tseng of Taiwan, who has three tour wins this season, and Stacy Lewis, who has two wins.
