Pro Wrestling shutters Kokusai Delfin Arena

Date Posted: 2012-06-29

A popular wrestling events venue in downtown Naha City will close its doors in late August, switching its efforts to staging events and festival performances.

Okinawa Professional Wrestling Co., which has been operating Delfin Arena on Kokusai Street since 2008, says it will close the facility in the Matsuo district of Naha City as a permanent venue. Officials of the wrestling company say their plans are still not firm, but do say their wrestlers will deploy throughout Japan as a performance group.

The company was the first to start professional wrestling in Okinawa, and has featured masked wrestlers with unique names related to Okinawa’s history and culture, like Habuman, Goya Mask, Shisa King and Mil Mongoose. The wrestlers paired off in matches against each other.

The company’s decision comes even as local tourism officials say Delfin Arena was gaining popularity with visitors.
