“Clothing Connection” Charity Sends Shipment to Philippines

Date Posted: 2000-01-22

The constant hard work of several volunteers supporting Okinawa’s “Clothing Connection” bore fresh fruits recently with another charity shipment of used clothing to the Philippines. The cargo went out on November 19th, 1999 on the vessel “Manoa”. The over 10.000 kilograms contained in the vessel are expected to arrive Manila by this Friday, January 21st, 2000.

Shipping costs, amounting to more than ¥150.000, were generously covered by the Okinawa International Women’s Club. The Club raised the money through various charity projects involving most of its members as main collectors. The ladies of this organization also participated massively in the sorting and packing process of the clothes they received from donors.

The 353rd Maintenance Squadron and the 18th Civil Engineering Squadron on Kadena Air base, as many local volunteers, also contributed in many ways to the successful shipment, which carried more than just clothes. In fact, the vessel also contained a fire truck which had been donated by the Urasoe City Fire Department. Jameson Mapalla, a local volunteer, took the responsibility to professionally disassemble the fire truck, a measure which helped the charity action any avoid customs problems. He also took care of loading, transportation of the container to the port, and tedious paperwork which would normally cost thousands of extra yen.

Once the container of clothing gets to its destination in the Philippines, the items will be distributed by the League of Municipalities in Manilla and will hopefully provide thousands of needy people with comfort.
