Tropical storm Talim to skirt Okinawa to west

Itís barely a tropical storm, but Talim is still determined to get at least a few peoplesí attention as it treks past Okinawa today.

Talim, which formed Monday in the South China Sea, is on a steady north northeasterly course at nine miles per hour that projects it passing between Taiwan and mainland China before skipping 200 miles west of Okinawa mid-afternoon today. The minimalist storm is packing winds of 20 m/s, or about 50 miles per hour, gusting to 65mph.

The U.S. Navyís Joint Typhoon Warning Center says Talim will pass 177 miles northwest of Kadena Air Base about 1 p.m. today. Its forecast of 45 knot winds, gusting to 55 knots, matches Japan Meteorological Agency and Okinawa Meteorological Agency predictions.
