Pet lovers paradise expands in Urasoe

Date Posted: 2012-06-22

Coo & Riku, one of the largest and best known pet shop chains in Japan, has beefed up its Okinawa presence with a new set up in Urasoe City.

An expansion of an earlier Urasoe City branch, the new location on Highway 58 has doubled in size, increasing both the number of pets being offered for sale, and the pet supplies available for sale. Pets are welcome to accompany their owners at the Coo & Riku store.

The first floor’s a shopper’s paradise, with more than 3,000 pet items available, set up by category to make it easy to find just the right item quickly. The pet sales section is also on the first floor. Sofas are set in front of the cages so potential buyers can ask a staff member to bring a pet from its cage to spend some one-on-one time to see if the animal’s ‘just right’. Coo & Riku has some staff members who speak English, and they’re identified by their unique ID tags.

Coo & Riku’s second floor is dedicated to an animal hospital, a grooming area and a pet café. Customers can relax, order light meals and drinks at the café, while pets are being groomed and trimmed. Mitsuru Koizumi, a Coo & Riku area manager, says the groom and trim department will wash a pet using a special bubble drop called a “micro bubble” that is effective against skin diseases.

There’s a kids space so the young generation doesn’t get bored during the Coo & Riku experience. At the cat café, the resident cats have freedom to roam and relax. There’s an entry fee for using the cat café. There’s even a rabbit area, where both rabbits and supplies are sold.

A new addition to Coo & Riku is a pet hotel where pets may be ‘checked in’ for stays of one day to one week. There’s an indoor dog run, as well as an outdoor dog run, at the store’s parking area. The dogs are permitted to run freely, and toys offered for play, says Koizumi, are ‘interesting’. The outdoor dog run is free on weekdays.

Coo & Riku operates a homepage, where more than 3,000 pets are being sold at one of the company’s 49 branches that run from Hokkaido to Okinawa. Coo & Riku can order the pet from any of the branches and bring it to Okinawa for the potential buyer to see, touch and play with.

The grand opening celebration runs through July 17th at Coo & Riku. Puppies and kittens nearly two months old are available for ¥10,000, ¥30,000 and ¥50,000. Costs of vaccinations and microchips are separate. Koizumi invites the community to drop by and see what’s available. “Coo & Riku is the most well known pet shop in Japan, and we have pride and trust of the public, and our new Urasoe branch building is the largest in the entire company.”

Coo & Riku is open seven days a week, year around, from 10 a.m. ~ 9 p.m. Note, though, that pets cannot be sold after 8 p.m. daily because a restriction in the Animal Protection Law. Animal enthusiasts can visit http://www.prt-coo.com. Credit cards and yen are accepted. The store’s located on Highway 58 between Camps Kinser and Foster. When heading south, past the Okinawa Baptist Church, Coo & Riku’s three-story building is on the left side, near the “big tire.”
