Miyazato gals finish 2nd, 6th at LPGA Championships

Date Posted: 2012-06-15

Ai Miyazato had her sights set on winning her first major championship at the LPGA Championship in Pittsford, New York, but it was her Okinawa namesake that almost upended China’s Shanshan Feng to take the $2.5 million tournament.

Feng became the fist Chinese player to win an LPGA Tour tile, and a major at the same time, closing with a two-stroke victory with a 5-under-67. Feng held on to stay ahead of Mika Miyazato, Stacy Lewis, Suzanne Petterson and Ji Eun-he, who all tied for second place. Their wins were worth $158,440 each.

Ai Miyazato, who’d said before the LPGA Championship “”I’ve been practicing with this in mind.” It wasn’t enough, as she tied for 6th, a stroke behind the pack. The placing give her $73,285, but her performance was not good enough to hold onto her fourth place ranking in the world standings. She dropped to 6th in the Rolex LPGA Rankings this week.
