Taiko Drum Festival targets young people

With the official start to summer less than a week away, a Taiko Drum Festival sets the drums moving Sunday to advance traditional culture while promoting new culture and attracting young people.

The Taiko Drum Festival Sunday starts at 1 p.m. at the Naha City Civic Hall, with the theme “Creative Eisa Contest 2012”. The first festival of the year will draw dozens of Eisa groups, with competition being judged in four categories. Originality, Unification, Powers of Expression and the Degree of Completeness of the groups will all be gauged by the seven members of the special judging committee and 10 general judging committee members chosen at random from the audience.

The 6th annual event will also feature a dance contest. The Taiko Festival in Naha “Creative Eisa Contest 2012” is open to the general public.

The group with the highest total score winds the Grand Prix, with the second designated winner of the semi-Grand Prix. The Grand Prix group advances to the World Eisa Festival Contest October 5th ~ 7th at Onoyama Park in Naha City.

Naha City Civic Hall is most easily reached from the bases by driving south to Naha City on Highway 330, continuing in to Naha to the intersection by Naha Police Headquarters, then turn left. Naha City Civic Hall is on the left, next to the Yorimiya Park. Parking is very limited, and use of public transportation is advised and encouraged.
