Joyriding young teens cause traffic accident

Date Posted: 2012-06-15

A 13-year-old junior high school student got behind the wheel of a mini-car, then set out on a drive along Highway 58 that ended with an 11:40 p.m. collision with a motorcycle.

The boy, along with three other 13-year-old junior high school second grades, were traveling in Nakadomari, Onna Village, when they made a U-turn at a crossing that does not have a traffic signal near Onna Village Museum. Ishikawa Police say the boys didnít notice a motorcycle traveling on the opposite lane and crashed into it.

The 33-year-old motorcycle driver suffered only slight facial injuries. The front passenger in the car incurred serious injuries including a broken cheekbone. The other boys sustained minor injuries, a cornea injury and bruises. Authorities say none of the injuries are life threatening.

Ishikawa Police are waiting for the boys to be released from the hospital before continuing their investigation. They plan to charge the under-age driver with violating the Road Traffic Law, specifically dangerous driving resulting in injury. They also plan to charge the other boys with other Road Traffic Law violations. Police say they do plan on taking all four boys into custody. That currently has not been done, and the boys are not arrested, because of the Juvenile Law. Police will notify the Child Consultation Center after the four youths leave the hospital.
