Stolen manhole covers cause traffic hazardDate Posted: 2012-06-08 In a four-day period last week, officials say 34 manhole covers were stolen. Five covers were first stolen in Naha City, followed by ten more a day later, and another three one day after that. During the same period in Tomigusuku City, 16 iron manhole covers were stolen. Police report one car damaged after being driven into an uncovered drainage hole in Naha City’s Oroku district. The car lost a wheel. “It is an unprecedented matter,” says a spokesman for the Naha City Road Control Section. “If you drive unwittingly into a drainage hole without the grid cover, it may lead to a serious accident.” The official encouraged “drivers to pay attention, and if they notice any drainage holes missing their cover grids, please call City Hall.” |
