Date Posted: 2012-06-08

A shrine or Utaki in Chatan Town’s Sunabe district has been desecrated by vandals who used red paint to mar graves and tombstones.

Okinawa Police haven’t figured a motive for the vandalism, which inflcted damage at 12 locations. Police believe the damage was done between 6 p.m. May 27th and 10 a.m. on June 1st, based on sighting information from local residents. Police are investigating the incidents as crimes of damage to articles.

Damages were in the form of graffiti saying “Do Studying Hard”, “Okinawa is Angry” or “Fool”. Behind and in front of each gravestone or tombstone marked or scribbled upon, a special envelope for funeral offerings was posted, along with four-character compounds.

Authorities checked 22 shrines at 12 locations for damage. All are controlled by the Sunabe District Residents’ Association.
