U.S. Military truck ties up traffic after striking bus

Date Posted: 2012-06-01

A group of 37 mainland Japan junior high school students got a surprise while on a school trip in Okinawa; their tour bus was scraped by an American military truck.

The U.S. truck was traveling northbound on Highway 58 from Naha International Airport when it stopped at a traffic signal alongside the tour bus on the Meiji Bridge in the capital city’s Asahimachi district. The 5:30 p.m. incident occurred as the truck began moving, scraping the side mirror of the bus stopped alongside the truck.

The students had arrived at Naha earlier in the morning from Hyogo Prefecture, and were en route to their hotel following a visit to Peace Memorial Park in southern Okinawa at the time of the incident. The accident caused a three-kilometer traffic jam because it occurred during afternoon rush hour traffic, and the investigation took time.
