MAG Okinawa Expo Japan plays out this weekend

Date Posted: 2012-06-01

A brand new expo event is debuting this weekend in Yomitan Village; the MAG Okinawa Expo Japan is coined from the words Manga, Anime and Game, with the keyword contents that are called ‘Cool Japan’ as marked from overseas countries.

If it sounds different, it is. Organizer Isao Miyagi, MAG Okinawa general manager, explains “the event is really enjoyable as a family time, so please come and join the event. Everyone can enter every contest, which include karaoke, dance and a costume play fashion show.” Miyagi says visitors wanting to be in the fashion show must bring their own costumes and source of sound for karaoke or dance music.

MAG Okinawa Expo Japan runs Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. ~ 7 p.m., at Murasakimura in Yomitan Village. Admission is ¥2,000 for everyone elementary school age and older. Tickets are available on base at MCCS Tickets Plus.

The Manga area features a Manga experience class with a booth where visitors can try their hand on drawing manga, such as tracing by pen on the basis of a line drawing offered. The Cosplay contest is arranged on a red carpet in Murasakimura, with the cosplayer champion decided by guests. Some events will liven the stage with songs, dance and a live Okinawa local idol group.

Cosplay extends to photographs, with organizers vying with the expression method, having visitors put on costumes of characters of manga, anime, and games. The event will be in the Murasakimura Karate Hall. Another event is planned based on the theme ‘Real Armed Struggle Tournament’ that has cosplayers performing fighting scenes.

Visit the all-you-can-read manga section, which features more than 10,000 mangas or cartoon magazines contributed by Kyoto International Manga Museum at Shikina-tei. Starting at 1 p.m. Sunday, manga are free from the section. On Saturday, Okinawa’s local hero, Ryujin Mabuya, will visit the venue for a show. There will also be a Mabuya suit for costume play by kids.

Saturday’s MAG Okinawa Expo Japan events include a Anime song contest at 1 p.m., cos-play Fashion Show at 2 p.m., Live Ryukyu Idol show at 3 p.m., a dance contest at 3:40 p.m., and a live performance again by Ryukyu Idol at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Kodona Band and Candy rehearsal is at 11 a.m., followed by the band at noon and Candy show at 1 p.m. Live by Ryukyu Idol is on stage at 1:30 pm., followed by the Anime song contest rehearsal at 2 p.m. and the Anime song contest finals at 4 p.m. There will also be a handshake event with Haruko Momoi at the Animate booth at 6:15 pm.
